STEVEN MEISEL
Steven Meisel was born in New York City in 1954. He is a true legend of fashion photography and one of the pioneers of the genre. Meisel studied at the High School of Art and Design in New York and Parsons The New School for Design, where he later returned as a teacher. After completing his studies, he began working as a fashion illustrator at Women’s Wear Daily. However, his passion for photography was too strong; Meisel finally left the magazine and started to work independently as a photographer. He took his first pictures in his own apartment and outdoors. His portfolio was noticed by the team of Seventeen magazine, who offered collaboration with him. In the late 1980s, Steven Meisel became one of the most famous commercial photographers. In 1988, he began working on Italian Vogue covers as the chief photographer. Meisel also collaborated with Vogue US, W Magazine, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Soho, and other world-famous glossy publications. Since 2004, he has produced many advertising campaigns for Prada, Versace, Dior, Valentino, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Armani, Alberta Ferretti, Vera Wang, and more. In 2004, Meisel took part in the exhibition ‘Fashioning Fiction in Photography since 1990’ at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His works could also be seen at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm and the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford. During his career, Steven Meisel has given no more than six interviews.
LINDA EVANGELISTA, NAOMI CAMPBELL, AMBER VALETTA, CHRISTY TURLINGTON, SHALOM HARLOW, PARIS, VOGUE ITALIA, MAY 1993
Steven Meisel has always been an advocate of the non-standard approach. For Italian Vogue, he took images of the most popular models of that time: Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valletta, Christy Turlington, and Shalom Harlow. In this shot, the models behave freely and playfully; dressed in loose men’s shirts, they have a pillow fight. This image was published on the cover of the May issue in 1993.
LINDA EVANGELISTA, NEW YORK CITY FOR VOGUE ITALIA 1990
This photograph of Linda Evangelista was taken in New York for Italian Vogue in 1990. Linda was one of Meisel’s favorite models. He called her his muse and adored her skill of transformation. The model said that this photo shoot had an unparalleled atmosphere of naturalness. They made many similar shots, but each one appeared to be unique.
CAROLYN MURPHY, ALPINE, VOGUE ITALIA, SEPTEMBER 2012
In this photograph, Carolyn Murphy is surrounded by mannequins with grotesque make-up that look a little frightening. This is how Steven Meisel shows us the ‘masks’ surrounding us in our daily life. Upon close examination of this surrealistic image, one can see another silhouette of Carolyn—she is looking at the viewer attentively, thus conveying the delicate atmosphere of the photo shoot. This image was published on the cover of Italian Vogue in September 2012.
