HOWARD SCHATZ

Howard Schatz was born in 1940 in Chicago. Schatz received worldwide recognition for his portraits, as well as his photographs in many different genres, including dance, sports, and underwater shots. In his photos one can see references to various photographic practices and the works of famous photo artists, from Robert Mapplethorpe to Greg Gorman and Gjon Mili. At the same time, his photographs are unmistakably recognizable in the modern world of diverse images. Thanks to the large formats chosen by the artist for his works, viewers can relate themselves to the images and see those details that are usually inaccessible to the human eye. Howard Schatz’s favorite theme is the beauty of the human body and soul. As a person with medical education, Schatz studies bodies from a scientific viewpoint and thoroughly thinks through the entire scene, finding the very best way to show a body’s structure, physical properties, and movement capabilities. Schatz holds many prestigious awards, including Photographer of the Year (2018, FotoFusion), One Eyeland Awards, a gold medal for the best photographic book of the year ‘Schatz Images: 25 Years’ (2015), a gold medal from the Rivne Photobiennale (2010), Lucie Awards (International Photography, 2008), and Grand Prize (Trierenberg Super Circuit, 2007), just to name a few. His works are exhibited around the world as a part of numerous private and museum collections, including the International Center of Photography in New York, the Auckland Museum, and the Musée De l’Elysée. Moreover, photographs by Howard Schatz have been published in Vanity Fair, Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker, and they have appeared on the covers of Time, Sports Illustrated, US News & World Report, and GQ Italia.
